The 48 teams running for the CHL-cup
It has been an outstanding season that ERC Ingolstadt has played. It was remarkable, how the team grew over the season after a mediocre performance in Champions Hockey League (CHL). Having an A-licence for this league, the Panthers have also reached the qualification because of their achivement in the league with a third rank in the main round and a position in the finals versus the new champion Mannheim.
Looking at the opponents the ERC had in the first year of CHL-hockey, SaiPa Lappeenranta did not qualify again for the second CHL-season after a quarterfinal loss against Kärpät Oulo, the later champion. EV Zug has also been defeted by the later title-holder HC Davos. HC Vitkovice lost in playoff qualification versus HC Pardubice. To resume, all contenders were thrown out by teams that are going to start in the upcoming CHL-season.
